Castles that are not in Finland any more

[edit]

User:Colchicum, commenting your revert, kindly define on what grounds Vyborg and Kexholm Castles were "Finnish in the Middle Ages". --Drieakko 19:25, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Vyborg castle was made by Swedes to defend area controlled by Sweden. During the time it was in active usage, it was never controlled by Finns. Kexholm Castle was built by Russians to defend Republic of Novgorod, then rebuilt by Swedes to defend Sweden. During the time it was in active usage, it was never controlled by Finns. Both castles were a part of a political entity called Finland only from 1812 until 1940, then already without military usage, and remain within Russia today. In the Middle Ages, neither castle was a part of "Finland", then a general regional term covering just the southwesternmost part of what Finland today is. --Drieakko 19:42, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's almost right, but then this list should not exist, because all the castles listed in the first two paragraphs are in this sense Swedish. The only difference is whether they were annexed by Russia in 1721-1809 and WWII-now. Is this so important? Colchicum 14:05, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. I would rename the template to "Castles in Finland" since definition for "Finnish castles" is too obscure. --Drieakko 18:16, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't feel that Vyborg Castle and the castles in Finland are different enough. BTW, this Kexholm Castle was built by Russians is dubious. As far as I know, there are no sources on the castle before 12-13th century and it is not known when exactly it was constructed, so it could be either Novgorodians or Swedes, while the area was populated by the Karelians anyway. IMHO, Swedish castles (or Swedish castles outside Sweden) would sound better. Colchicum 10:53, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Kexholm castle was built and rebuilt many times. As for the current template, in the lack of definition "Finnish castles", I vote for the template be named as "Castles in Finland", as that would be unambiguous, just listing the castles within the borders of Finland. --Drieakko 17:56, 31 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I changed the template so that it is collapsed by default, and also changed some links so that they point to articles instead of redirects. MKFI (talk) 13:45, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Also marked castles etc outside modern borders of Finland with cursive.MKFI (talk) 14:10, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
